The term Third Culture Kids, relates to the fact that these kids (and I am one) were neither part of their birth culture nor the culture of the country in which they were transplanted. The typical Third Culture Kid has moved at least once by their 5th birthday, and will move at least four times in their life. They speak at least two languages and have a 4-year college-degree. Data based on an informal online survey of 200 Third Culture Kids.
“A third culture kid is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside their parents’ culture. The third culture kid builds relationships to all the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. The "third culture" to which the term refers is the mixed identity that a child assumes, influenced both by their parents' culture and the culture in which they are raised. Third Culture Kids are children reared in a country other than their passport - they develop a cultural identity that is neither multi-cultural nor bi-cultural but is rather a third culture.

Working with Third Culture Kids (TCKs) returning home for university (or “college” as it is referred to in the United States) is a special passion of mine.
